Guest Post: Operation Paperback

Our service members make sacrifices every day for our country.  It takes so little to let them know that we appreciate what they are doing for us.  Operation Paperback supports US troops by giving them the opportunity to escape into a good book.  Since 1999, our volunteers have shipped a total of 1.5 million books around the globe.

Every day we accept requests from US Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines who are stationed in places like the Horn of Africa, Afghanistan, or Korea.  Any service member is entitled to receive our free shipments of books throughout their deployment.

Our troops are so appreciative of the books they receive.

From one Soldier overseas:

I absolutely cannot communicate how grateful I am to have received today the books you sent in the mail. I am touched beyond words, and the book selection you sent is PERFECT given my reading tastes and preferences. The perfect touch of home for a guy who is far from it. Thank you so very, very much. I will never forget this, and my children will know about the nice folks that sent me books to read while I was away…

Helping with Operation Paperback is easy!  All you have to do is gather up gently used books and use our website (www.operationpaperback.org) to match the books you have on hand with an open request from a service member.  We provide you with the troop shipping address and mailing instructions.  It only costs about $5 to send a medium box of books to someone in the military.  For many, this is a family or local community project.  You can send one box or several every month.  It’s up to you.  Just know that every donation of books is greatly appreciated by our troops!

Many thanks to Andrea Hoshmand McAfee, Vice President of Operation Paperback, for her wonderful guest post. For the past two months Miss First Grader and Little Miss Four have learned a lot by participating in this wonderful, easy-to-do opportunity. Consider asking holiday visitors to bring along a few books. Make Operation Paperback a simple volunteer project during your holidays.
